The inner tube is bulging out despite my attempts to repair it with material from a face mask.
The nearby bikeshop in Wyndham Park was able to provide me with a very large patch so that I could better seal the repair as a temporary measure until a new tyre was ordered. It held out for the rest of the day.
The bulge is a bit like an aneurysm:
