[Later image this issue elsewhere: #183823.] [Image taken 17.6.22] Piccadilly (junction with Pavement), York. The unpopular TSAR scheme (democracy.york.gov.uk/mgDecisionDetails.aspx) puts pedestrian crossing lights on the same side of the street and removes them from the opposite side. This location is still the preferred and understood arrangement: the red and green cross/don't cross figures face you. And are visible to all no matter the throng. In York many crossings are hugely oversubscribed (as here). There’s not chance of people being able to see a same side indicator. This crossing is so busy one pedestrian has given up on using the pavement and is by passing it - walking in the road. Other images today and links: #183616.
