[Image taken 2.7.22] St Leonard's Place, York. The CYC Executive Member for Transport was asking for examples of behaviour at this junction (St Leonard's Place, Bootham - left, Gillygate - ahead). I decided to stand in the sun in the sheep pen and observe for 20 minutes (circa 13.25 to 13.45). I believe I saw all the types of motorist behaviour that put people in cycles, on foot, in wheelchairs, etc, at risk. Most frightening was the 'ghost driver' who at 13.35-ish came out of Gillygate and headed into the oncoming lane ie the one from which the driver of the dark blue vehicle is exiting. It happens when the lane is empty. But that does not make it hazardless. Cyclists and drivers are approaching this junction all the time. The most recent time I observed this was during early lockdown and there were very many pedestrians crossing. This image shows one of the behaviours regular users of this junction contend with very regularly. The driver in the light blue car was in the left turn (Bootham only) lane. She/he want to go straight ahead (Gillygate). The two lanes have different timings to enable pedestrians to cross. The driver leaves the Bootham left-turn lane (red light) crossing the ASL at its head to go at the same time as the driver on the right has a green light and has gone as s/he is heading for Gillygate. Continuation of the lane changing driver's route: #183818. Other images today and links: #183816.
