[Image taken 2.7.22] St Leonard's Place, York (Gillygate lane). A First York (firstbus.co.uk/york) driver audibly sped up as s/he headed for these lights. All the lights at this junction with its multiplicity of phases change very quickly after (an ex-bus driver neighbour says “at the same time” the previous one has turned red. This puts pedestrians and cyclists at real risk. It also makes active travel unattractive. Sustrans quotes DfT figures saying cycle movements across this junction have fallen by around half :“Cycle use at junction is declining e.g. in 2008 2,147 cyclists used Bootham in 2019 this had fallen to 1149. Source DfT traffic counts” (democracy.york.gov.uk/documents/s149565/Annex%20D%20-%20Offline%20Consultation%20Responses.pdf). That’s how it feels to this regular user. And I couldn’t imagine a child using this to get to school (there are two on Bootham) on their own. Even ‘book ending’ a child would be difficult as there is no predictable safe strategy to navigate this junction. Then there’s the pollution – you can smell it. Continuation of this driver's journey here today: #183822. Other images today and links: #183816.
